5 Ways Neurodivergent Therapy in Scottsdale, AZ Can Improve Your Mental Health

Being neurodivergent comes with its own set of challenges—things like sensory overload, trouble staying organized, big emotions, or struggling to connect with others. It can make everyday life feel pretty overwhelming, and unfortunately, a lot of traditional therapy just isn’t designed with neurodivergent brains in mind. That can leave you feeling misunderstood or like you're the problem (which you’re not!).

That’s where neurodivergent-friendly therapy comes in. Instead of trying to make you fit into a neurotypical mold, it helps you understand and work with your brain, not against it. It’s all about finding strategies that actually make sense for you.

How Neurodivergent Therapy Can Improve Your Life

In this post, we’ll go over five ways neurodivergent therapy can help improve your mental health so you can feel more in control, less stressed, and more like yourself.

1. Helps You Develop Coping Strategies That Actually Work for You

I’ll never forget the day I was first introduced to the word “mindfulness.” Someone described it to me as a way to quiet the mind. At first, I thought, “Awesome!” This was exactly what I needed! They then proceeded to tell me that the way to do this was to sit still for at least 30 minutes in silence alone and “not think.”

Wait, what?

You’re saying I should “quiet my mind” by not thinking? And sit in one spot without moving much for half an hour? And somehow magically “not think?”

The idea was so far-fetched to me, I actually just burst out laughing. I mean, come on. Me, sitting for 30 minutes in silence, not moving and somehow not thinking? Hilarious! I might as well look out the window waiting to see pigs flying.

For some people, the idea of sitting in silence for a while doesn’t sound unreasonable at all, but for me, it’s just not something that’s going to happen anytime soon. Having ADHD, I’m always moving around, thinking, and wanting some sort of auditory stimulation.

Finding Strategies For Your Brain

But, here’s what I learned over the years. There are lots of ways to practice mindfulness and other coping strategies that work well for neurodivergent brains. The thing is, these strategies are sometimes not the typical ones that work for neurotypical brains.

Neurodivergent therapy can help you find the strategies that work best for YOUR brain and not ones that generally work for others. Having a therapist guide you through the process is so important because it can be hard not to give up when certain strategies don’t work well. The key here is to have a neurodivergent therapist walk you through the process so you don’t end up spinning your wheels trying strategies that probably won’t work for you.

2. Reduces Masking and Supports Authentic Self-Expression

Masking (hiding or censoring) can often lead to burnout, lots of anxiety, and heightened distressing emotions. Neurodivergent therapy can help you learn how to accept yourself for who you are as a person while identifying areas for growth that you want to focus on.

The reality is that we all mask sometimes. For example, the way we speak to our loved ones is very different than the way we speak to a stranger or a boss at work. I’ve had lots of bosses over the years that I would have LOVED to be more blunt with (oh so many four letter words are popping up into my head right now 😆), but I didn’t because my relationship was a professional one, which required me to filter what I said and how I said it.

But the pendulum can also swing too far in the other direction. When we mask or censor ourselves too much, it slowly eats away at our mental health and sense of self-worth.

So the key is figuring out what to share, when to share it, and how to share it. For example, maybe one of your neurodivergent traits is chewing on your hair when you feel anxious. Unless this is somehow causing damage to your teeth, it’s not something that you need to stop doing. But, if you WANT to stop doing it, then we can look at other ways of regulating your nervous system.

Through neurodivergence therapy, you get to be in the driver’s seat. As the neurodivergent affirming therapist, I’m simply there to help you navigate to get where you want to go.

3. Helps You Break Free from Burnout Cycles

Many neurodivergent people push themselves to keep up with neurotypical expectations, leading to burnout. And when you burnout, it affects every aspect of your life: relationships, work, school, sleep, appetite, etc. Neurodivergence therapy can help you recognize the signs of burnout before it happens and develop strategies to decompress so you avoid burnout completely.

This is usually done by setting boundaries, creating energy-saving routines, and getting really familiar with your warning signs.

4. Improves Communication and Relationships

Social interactions can be challenging for neurodivergent people due to differences in communication styles. Neurodivergence therapy can help improve understanding, boundary-setting, and advocating for needs in relationships. We also work on understanding your unique communication needs because no two neurodivergent people are exactly alike. Maybe you prefer to text rather than talk on the phone. Or maybe your child needs you to say their name before giving a direction to do something. The point is, we work on creating a communication plan that works for you.

5. Supports Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning issues play out in different ways but typically include difficulties with time management, organizing and/or losing things, issues with short-term memory, and having a hard time organizing thoughts and ideas. These issues are pretty common for neurodivergent people. Neurodivergent therapy helps you improve these skills through ADHD-friendly techniques. For kids, executive functioning work occurs through play.
